Welcome to Yellerdogcalls.com
Yellerdog Predator Calls are designed and built in Clinton, Michigan, USA.
I am Lee Smith, the developer and manufacturer of these calls. I have owned and operated a Tool & Die Business since 1990. In the mid 90's I became interested in Coyote calling and hunting. In a short time it became a passion of mine. I used primarily hand calls and the natural progression of things led me to try to develop my own. This was due to both my lack of satisfaction with the calls available on the market and my natural inclination to improve products that I try.
Once the decision was made to make my own calls I had a clear set of goals I wanted to achieve. My calls would be easy to blow, to many I had tried took so much air to blow that you would be to out of breath to make the shot if you did manage to call something in. My calls would not freeze, no matter how cold it is outside, something many calls are prone to do. My calls would not lock up when wet after blowing on them for several minutes (always a great annoyance when you have a predator your working in for a shot). I also wanted to be able to produce a wide variety of sounds with each call.
With all these goals set, there was only one option. The open reed design. First the various mouthpiece configuration were designed on CAD. They were then turned on the lathe and CNC milled. Each one would be tested and design and machining changes would be made. After a long and arduous process I had models that were ready to hit the field for more testing.
In hunting situations they performed well, but needed a few minor modifications. These changes were made and the field test were continued. Finally, I achieved all my goals.
This extensive development program was very gratifying. To go from an idea in my head to a line of the most effective predator calls made was both challenging and rewarding. Since then, the last sound many predators have heard was the mournful distress of the YDD2 or YDMC or "The howl of a Yellerdog!"
